Mosonmagyaróvár is one of the cities in Hungary that could keep its special role. The historical changes could not defeat the citizen's will of living. It was road, gate, borderline and also the city of the opening of borders. Volley massacred most of its young population in 1956 and four decades struck the seal of silence on it.
It was the central of the county and became a small town judged necrosis. Its Jewry was deported and its German population was relocated. Despite of it this entire town always found itself. It was the center of living for the native Hungarian and German population. It was the city of waters and usually called as the capital of Szigetköz although the city is found on the edge of it.
It lies in the shadow of two modern metropolises - Vienna and Bratislava - but has own unique flavors. Its two parts Moson and Magyaróvár lived separate lives till the unification in 1939.
Mosonmagyaróvár is a "university town" Hungary's first university of agricultural sciences was founded here in 1818.
What does a settlement with its houses, roads and the historical air of its buildings, stick together? Each of them is a brick, a drop of mortar in the structure. But the spirit, the fresh air you can breathe, the warmth of the handshake, a bright face is that special mortar without which the city is nothing more but a collection of houses, streets and parks.
Mosonmagyaróvár is not that city. Our town - "the keeper of thousand years" - is hospitable. It loves and proudly guides the strangers, and invites them to walk in the historical downtown of Moson and Magyaróvár. Show them the Castle, reveals its wounds and also its wonderful rivers: the Danube and the Lajta.
